We took the Metro to the Montmartre early evening. It was an uneventful ride but we didn't realize when we chose not to use the elevator that the climb up a spiral staircase was 36 metres up. The station is the deepest on the whole system.
Now that was a chore.
The Montmartre is more than just an area of Paris. It is the highest point of land and it has been a place of worship from the Druids in ancient Gaul, the Romans built temples here and a succession of Christian churches has been built here since before the 12th century.
The Basilica de Sacre Cour was build in the 1870's. It is a beautiful building particularly seen in the early evening sun. It is quite a contrast - the very Holy church beside the masses of tourists who come to sit on the approaches to the church, enjoy the view, to watch the buskers, the street sellers hawking cheap trinkets and selling beer.
